What is the purpose of the Tulsa Press Club?

I would never join a club that would have ME as a member… But, in the Press Club’s case, “I’LL MAKE AN EXCEPTION”

  1. To promote higher standards of journalism and to encourage the pursuit of journalism careers among students.
  2. To defend the principle of Freedom of the Press and the public’s right to have access to public information.
  3. To encourage the interchange of ideas among all members of the media and those with whom they come in contact.
  4. To foster the highest ideals of ethics and fairness among all members of the journalism profession.
  5. To extend benevolence and assistance to recognized charitable organizations as finances permit and the Board of Directors directs.

What is the Tulsa Press Club Gridiron, and what’s its excuse for lasting more than 60 years?

The Tulsa Press Club Gridiron is a Tulsa tradition since 1932.  The musical satirical show, which is written, produced and performed by members of the Press Club, lampoons the newsmakers and news events of the past 12 months.

Anyone who has seen a gridiron — and that includes most governors, senators, congressmen, mayors, college presidents and civic and business leaders in the past 60 years — knows the distinctive format:  humorous topical lyrics to familiar songs and a script written in rhymed couplets

Where do the proceeds from the show go?

Proceeds from the Gridiron go into a trust fund that provides scholarships for journalism students at area colleges.

When and where are the performances?

The Gridiron cast puts on two performances of the show, usually in March.  For some reason, attendance seems to improve and handshaking grows more spirited during election years.
