Gridiron Authors

Ed Bettinger – Author since 2004; Gridiron Trust

Ed likes his gin neat, steaks rare, and women well done. A PSO Corporate Communications manager, he rounds out his resume’ as a writer, backpacker, beer connoisseur, and all-round bon vivant.  Ed authored the classic backcountry cocktail guide, “Drinker’s Guide to Hiking in the Grand Canyon”, which he previously published as “Hiker’s Guide to Drinking in the Grand Canyon.” He also wrote “Guide to Dating Female Runners.” (Tip #1: Never compliment her fragrance by saying it’s like the early morning bouquet of a fresh port-a-john before other runners use it.)

Tom Campbell – Author since 1975; Gridiron Trust

“It’s a miracle I was not institutionalized after 35 years of writing Gridiron skits.  For 31 years we wrote dialog in couplets.  I am just now getting over my penchant to talk that way: ‘Good to see you, let’s go get a brew!’ I was in one Gridiron cast before becoming a writer…played a small role as Richard Nixon.  Ultimately, I had parts in about 25 shows before bowing out as a thespian.  For many years my wife, Charlotte, helped prepare food for the Friday night cast party.  I well remember pouring stiff drinks back when liquor was legally taboo in Oklahoma.”

Melissa Clark – Author since 2009

Melissa manages internal communications at Williams.  A Tulsa native, Clark graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism. She is accredited in public relations through the Public Relations Society of America. Consistent with her volunteer commitments supporting children and education, writing for the Tulsa Gridiron gives her the opportunity to maim well-known show tunes in the interest of raising funds for journalism scholarships.

Tim Colwell – Author since 2008

Tim is a twisted individual and he uses that to his advantage. He is the creator of The Queen of Cards, a line of black and white vintage photo greeting cards that feature fun and bizarre captions, the type that his relatives don’t at all understand. During the day, Tim works for Williams in Corporate Communications. This is his third Gridiron as a contributor

Kelly Cory – Author since 2009

John and Kelly sitting in a tree…k-i-s-s-i-n-g.  Newlyweds…say no more!

Mimi Gooden – Author since 1993

Scribbled on cocktail napkins in the seedy cantinas of East Tulsa, Mimi Gooden aspires to top the 2010 song parody scene with such sure-to-be hits as Snow on the Groun’, Change My Spots to Blue and You Strapped a Bomb in Briefs. Gooden’s larger-than-life concepts and carefully metered replacement lyrics meld together, forging yet another collection of Gridiron classics that often lean so far left, they’re horizontal.  With standout tracks like “Vaccinate,” already certified platinum in Europe, Mimi can count on dwelling in virtual anonymity forever.

Bruce Howard – Author since 2005

Bruce is director of Sports Broadcasting, and radio “voice of the Golden Hurricane” at The University of Tulsa.  Outside of attracting very bad restaurant service and unwittingly hacking off cab drivers, Bruce’s talents are few.  Writing may be a fun thing for him, but he sure is a burden on the editor.  He either leaves his participles dangling or loses them altogether.  Further, there seems to be no solution to his habit of ending sentences with a preposition that he knows of.

Randy Krehbiel – Author since 1990; Chief author since 2008; Gridiron Trust chair

Randy once spent a week at the Tulsa State Fair without leaving the grounds. This could account for a lot.

Andrea Myers – First-year author

Andrea is in the Corporate Communications department at Williams, and is president of the Tulsa Press Club. In her free time, she enjoys walks along Boston Avenue, dining on chicken-fried steak, and attempting to cook edible meals for her family.  She makes a special shout-out to her 10-year-old daughter, Lilly, who can sing “Popular” with the best of them.

John Stancavage – First-year author

Inspired by Elton John scribe Bernie Taupin, Tulsa World business editor John Stancavage spent far too much time at Lewis & Clark Junior High School writing would-be pop lyrics in his wire-bound notebooks, only to be mocked mercilessly by his friends. It turns out that an invitation to compose words for the 2010 Gridiron allowed Stancavage to relive those days, as large swaths of his efforts were summarily ridiculed, ignored or deleted. Listen carefully during the health care medley for a couple of lines of his that somehow actually slipped into the show.

Rebecca Ungerman – Author since 2003

Holly Wall – First-year author

Holly, who is a frequent sufferer of writer’s cramp, is the senior editor at Tulsa Business Journal and a contributing writer for Urban Tulsa Weekly, Tulsa Kids, Mia Magazine, Intermission Magazine and Art Focus Oklahoma. She has a two-year-old son who is awesome. She has no hobbies because she has no free time!
